I have been in the business world for 39 years since I earned my MBA degree in May, 1981. In that time, I have never seen anything like what we have all experienced in the last five months. The recession during the early 80’s was much more painful economically but it didn’t involve shutting down the entire economy. Inflation, unemployment and mortgage interest rates were all out of sight ranging from 10 – 18% and jobs were nonexistent but the world was not on lock down. AIDS, the Swine Flu and Ebola were all devastating but didn’t impact the vast majority of the population. The stock market crashes in 1987 and 2000 and the financial crisis in 2008 saw billions of dollars in savings disappear overnight but the markets always rebound and we get past these bubbles. So what is the path forward as we navigate this new crisis, COVID 19?
To be sure, I am an eternal optimist and my glass is always half full. So I choose to believe that we will certainly come thru this pandemic with the same resilience that has carried this country past all of the historic devastation that we have survived in the past. COVID is here to stay and we will have to make permanent adjustments to achieve the new normal that will exist in 2021 and beyond. So what’s next?
Similar to the 8 vaccinations that babies under 2 are given today, I expect a COVID vaccination to be added to that list once it is tested, approved and commercially available at a reasonable price. Most of us have an annual influenza shot, I would expect an annual COVID vaccination will be a new precaution soon. Social distancing, while it will relax a bit, will likely continue for a while and we may see some people continue to wear a mask more frequently as they have in Asia long before this pandemic. The increase in personal hygiene and a greater awareness of self-responsibility for our health will be a positive outcome of this experience.
As for business, I see some positive developments learned during this pandemic. More work from home opportunities will likely continue for those that have demonstrated that they have the discipline to work virtually unsupervised. For me, this information age has allowed me to conduct business where ever I have WiFi access, my laptop and my cell phone. At least for a while, I see less business travel, especially by airline, and more Zoom meetings, interviews and conference calls which are nearly as productive. I am old school and strongly prefer face-to-face relationships so they will continue, but perhaps not as frequently. On-line Doctor visits for routine check-ups will be the norm as we search for cost savings in healthcare. The list of new efficiencies and enhanced service opportunities are vast and will likely be accelerated into everyday life.
I want to personally thank all of our associates and customers for your flexibility and patience during this unprecedented time in 2020. Whatever the future holds, we will be here ready to service your needs while providing the best possible value to all.
